Charles Mess, Jr., M.D.
||Dr. Mess in his own words:
||“I enjoy learning about the musculoskeletal system and its related pathologies. Orthopaedists have the unique ability to cure or fix medical problems in our specialty unlike other non-surgical fields in medicine. Sports and their related injuries connect very closely to orthopaedics, and the combination of the two is a natural interest to me. Orthopaedic surgery can be extremely rewarding.”
“I realize that my patients are trusting me with a great responsibility, and I just try to help people.”

What patients have to say:
“I have had the necessity to call upon the talents of Dr. Mess Jr. twice over the past 3 ½ years. I have undergone total replacements of a shoulder and a hip which were achieved with complete success. My husband had a total shoulder replacement accomplished with the same success by Dr. Mess Jr. Our thanks and gratitude goes to a very personable and thoroughly knowledgeable physician. (Word to the wise: Do your therapy to protect you and Dr. Mess’ work.)” –Jacqueline C.
"Dr. Mess was my second opinion for a bad hip which I had been limping along with for two years. My surgeon at that time kept saying "just wait until you can no longer tolerate the pain". I was very concerned about the increasing amounts of pain medicine I was taking. After mentioning this to my primary care doctor, he suggested getting a second opinion and highly recommended Dr. Mess. Upon examining the x-rays, Dr. Mess very clearly explained that my hip needed replacing as it was bone-on-bone and that to wait could cause more damage and more pain medicine would likely be necessary.
"The next day, I called to get the surgery scheduled. The office staff was very helpful along the way from scheduling and answering questions promptly, to dealing with the dreaded insurance company. My surgery was scheduled for Montgomery General (due to my insurance requirement).
"The surgery went smoothly, and I was home on the third day, with only a 4" anterior incision. I was fortunate to have an immediate 2 weeks of in-home therapy followed by 4 weeks (8 sessions) of outpatient therapy.
"After 4 weeks, I felt as good as new, and am totally pain free!
"The expertise provided by Dr. Mess, the helpfulness of the Potomac Valley Orthopaedics staff and knowledge of the Potomac Valley Sports Medicine for therapy have been invaluable. I would highly recommend their services."
“I had been in severe pain with my bad knees, bone on bone for three years. When I finally got up the courage to see a doctor I SURE picked the right one. I started in Nov. 2009 with the first knee replacement and Dr. Mess, Jr. said it would take about 15 days to feel good. He was right. I was in p.t. in the Silver Spring office 10 days later and already could not wait to have the second knee replaced. I did do that one 4 months later, April 2010. My stay at Montgomery General Hospital was a pleasant experience both the first and second time.
I am a totally new person. I can now play tennis again, walk without limping and never do I have pain. Dr. Mess Jr. and his staff are truly thoughtful, caring and understanding people. My office visits to the Silver Spring office were usually on time and smiles from everyone. From the time to set the surgery up through the hospital stay and home again I always knew that I could call the office and be taken care of immediately.” – Sue S.
“My hip replacement was my second, but due to moderate to severe pain in my right hip, I sought help. It compared most favorably to my first experience. One month shy of my 84th birthday, and I did have concerns. I did not need to worry. It proved to be a most positive experience. Thank you doctor (Dr. Mess) and all who helped…I give all concerned an A+.” – Elizabeth S.
