Dr. Bhatnagar completed his B.A./M.D. in 7 years at John Hopkins Undergrad and School of Medicine. During his training he received the Watson Fellowship to study traditional Indian and Tibetan medicine in Asia, as well as many other honors and awards. He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and fellowship in Spine Surgery with Dr. John Kostuik, a well-renowned spine surgeon.
Dr. Bhatnagar traveled and worked extensively abroad, including working in Cambodian refugee camps and on the warfront/border of Afghanistan. He also worked in China, Tibet and India, as well as Butan. He was the sole orthopaedic surgeon in Butan for a period of time. He volunteered at the Baltimore Zoo, operating on leopards, eagles and other exotic animals.
Dr. Bhatnagar began his private practice with Potomac Valley Orthopaedics in 1996 and was instrumental in developing and popularizing new minimally invasive approaches to the spine, performing vertebroplasty, as well as laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery.
Most recently, in addition to his private practice with Potomac Valley, Dr. Bhatnagar was involved in the development of innovative products for the orthopaedic, spine and neurosurgery fields. He had several patents and patents pending at the time of his death.
Friends and staff alike describe Dr. Bhatnagar as not only a talented and brilliant surgeon and entrepreneur, but a kind, compassionate and humble man who will be greatly missed.
Dr. Bhatnagar is survived by his wife Sona and their 3 children. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
